US Aerobatic Pilot Steve Andelin Killed in Crash at Guatemala Air Show

Friday afternoon, United States aerobatic pilot Steve Andelin was killed in a crash while preparing for this weekend’s Iztapa Guatemala Air Show. Two spectators were also killed in the crash, and additional injuries were reported. Saturday’s air show has been cancelled following Friday’s crash, and officials are on scene investigating the incident.

Steve Andelin was a California-based commercial and aerobatic pilot who was flying at this weekend’s show as part of team Red Bull, led by American pilot Kirby Chambliss. Steve was a two-time member of the US Aerobatic Team, and a winner at the US Unlimited Aerobatic Championship. He had previously served as technician for Team Chambliss as part of the Red Bull Air Race series, and as a test pilot for Zivko Aeronautics, the company that manufactures the Edge 540 flown by Kirby Chambliss and the rest of the Red Bull Air Race pilots. His full-time job was as an international Captain for a major U.S. airline.

American pilots Kirby Chambliss and Skip Stewart were also in Guatemala for this weekend’s show, and both announced Friday evening that they were safe and not involved in the crash. As always, stay tuned to our website and social media for the latest updates.
