Italian Air Force Frecce Tricolori Announces 2024 North American Tour

With the 2023 air show season complete, we turn our attention now to what is already shaping up to be a memorable 2024 air show season. The first major schedule announcement comes from the Italian Air Force Frecce Tricolori. During a November 23, 2023 presentation of the 2024 Italian Air Force Calendar, Italian Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Luca Goretti announced that the Italian Aerobatic Display Team would tour North America in 2024, the first time in over 30 years.

In 2023, The Italian Air Force celebrated their 100-year anniversary, and with that Frecce Tricolori kept their 2023 schedule within Italy. In 2024, the Royal Canadian Air Force celebrates 100 years of service, and the Italian display team will bring their white, green, and red smoke to Canada as a salute. While a specific schedule was not yet announced, Gen. Luca Goretti did announce that among the North American tour will be a flyover and a performance in Los Angeles, California, aligning with the arrival of the Italian Navy’s Amerigo Vespucci. The training vessel is the oldest naval vessel of the Italian Navy at 92 years old. In July of 2023, the ship set out on a 20-month world tour, sailing over 40,000 nautical miles while visiting 31 ports, 28 countries, and five continents. The Amerigo Vespucci is scheduled to visit Los Angeles July 1-6, 2024, which hints at a July visit to California for the Frecce Tricolori.

The Frecce Tricolori was created in March of 1961 with the goal of training Italian Air Force pilots in aerobatics. Their signature white, green, and red smoke represents the three colors of the Italian flag. The white represents the snow of the Italian Alps, the green represents the country’s fertile plains, and the red represents the blood spilled during the Italian wars of independence. The team currently flies the Italian-built Aermacchi MB-339 trainer, with 10 being flown in each display.
